Almost Heaven… Take Me Home, Country Roads...
John Denver’s song, “Country Roads”, was a hit on the
radio in1974, when a young girl from New York moved
to the Sierra foothills. Using her natural love of clothes,
she opened an alternative clothing boutique for men and
women, selling patched jeans and embroidered clothing.
Mountain Mama Clothing Boutique was born, in a tiny space
in the then-new Gold Country Mall. Now the longest
established women’s clothing boutique in Auburn,
Mountain Mama is located in the Auburn Town Center.
Original owner, Judith Gordon, still recalls those hippie days
and her newly formed business; “I started Mountain
Mama as a young girl in my 20’s. When I went buying for
the store I basically would just buy what I liked and wanted
to wear myself. I was lucky that others liked what I picked!
Back then, I would sell to high school girls and young women
with small children. Now these same women still buy my
clothes – not only for themselves, but they bring their
daughters and grandchildren with them!”
Judith continues to use her intrinsic love of fashion to search
for just the perfect mix of style and unique fabrics for her
customers. The Mountain Mama team works hard to provide
customers with the help they need to put together outfits,
update their look, or find that perfect gift. Judith thanks the
Auburn community for all their support throughout the years.
“I would not be here without the help of so many great,
hard working, creative people, and of course, the loyalty
and enthusiasm of our customers over all these years.”
